Cidi (CHEE-dee) are the smallest known sapients. They are 6-10 inches tall, and weigh less than five pounds. Cidi are pseudo mammalian. They most resemble a tiny bear, with powerful legs able to propel them several feet in a standing leap. They have leathery, hairless prehensile tails. Cidi are cheerful and gregarious. They are curious about new people, and enjoy novel experiences. Cidi form a series of romantic relationships over the course of their lives, and children are nursed and raised by male Cidi.
Cidi are native to Pokoo, Dibdib V. Pokoo is a temperate, war-scarred world. Cidi have colonized 23 worlds alone, and have a few shared colonies with irari and an phar. 15 cidi colony worlds are moderately well populated, and three colony worlds were founded by colony worlds.
Cidi are pleasant, chatty, and outgoing, but have a strong sense of dignity. They are quick to make friends, but also quick to take offense. Although cidi are objectively adorable, they hate being thought of as “cute”, and nothing will instill rage like treating a cidi as a pet or toy. Cidi often have or become enemies, but also have huge networks of friends and family. They are suitable as patrons, allies, contacts, and enemies about equally. Most cidi would abhor becoming a dependent of anyone who isn’t family.
Cidi have large extended family clans that form the basis of their politics. Clans are governed by elder members, and make complex alliances with other clans. Sometimes, over many generations, a close alliance will cause two allied clans to merge into a new, more numerous clan. Other times, a clan that has had poor leadership will splinter into multiple smaller clans. There is frequent armed conflict between competing clans, but the clans participate in a “United Nations” style parliament called Cirill, which is the cidi liason with the Alliance.
Cidi live among their sept, a branch of a clan to which they are most closely related through their fathers. Sept dwellings are often built as connected apartments or condominiums. Cidi marriages do not usually last a lifetime. A male cidi might have a few wives at a time, while females will only have one husband at a time. Divorce is seldom acrimonious, and is at a wife’s discretion. It is considered cruel to leave a husband with young children and no wife, so a cidi woman who wants a divorce, but whose husband has no other wives will sometimes arrange for a friend to take her place.
Cidi women can give birth to litters of 3-6 young, as often as every three years, for a fertile period that lasts about 20 years. Most cidi practice birth control, and only carry one litter in their livetime. Male cidi have the mammary glands, and are the primary caregiver for children. While some female cidi are active in raising their kids, it is not a traditional role for cidi women.
